As we come to the end of another academic year, I want to let you all know how well things have been going in the Department of Philosophy. We’ve had stimulating and well-attended lectures by both outside speakers and departmental faculty (one of which was co-sponsored by the School of Music and the School of Art), three of our undergraduate students recently participated in the university’s undergraduate research symposium, our new Ethics Club is working with the Philosophy Graduate Student Association on an ethics-focused film series, and faculty members are publishing and presenting at an impressive rate. On a personal level, I loved teaching Aesthetics (PHIL 4230/6230) this Spring: our students—both undergraduates and graduate students—really are wonderful. Philosophy is flourishing at the University of Georgia.
As always, we appreciate your interest in the Department of Philosophy. Please email me at Aaron.Meskin@uga.edu if you have any questions, want to share something about your time at UGA, or would like to arrange a day to visit. And, as always, Go Dawgs! Aaron Meskin Professor and Head of Department |

Ethics Initiatives in Action
UGA’s inaugural Ethics Bowl (image above) took place in October 2022 with much success—over 20 students joined eight separate teams to participate in this exciting day-long event. The following month, UGA sent a team for the first time to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl at the University of North Georgia – Gainesville. These undergraduates, coached by graduate student Danielle Kotrla, had a respectably strong showing against several well-seasoned teams.
UGA Students Do Philosophy with Local Teens
The Philosophy for Children service-learning class (PHIL3900S) continues this year with “Let’s Talk About That,” hosted by the Athens-Clarke County Library. Graduate student, Marissa Willis leads undergraduate students in engaging with local teens on a broad variety of philosophical topics in this very popular afterschool program. |

Undergraduate News & Accomplishments
In December 2022, the Department of Philosophy celebrated eight graduating philosophy majors. Three undergraduate philosophy students participated in this year’s annual CURO Symposium, at the Classic Center in downtown Athens in April 2023. CURO offers UGA undergraduate students of all disciplines and levels an opportunity to present their research to a broader community in either poster or oral presentation formats. This May, twenty-one more students will be graduating from UGA with philosophy degrees!
Graduate News & Accomplishments
Congratulations go out to Dr. Michael Lindquist and Dr. Claire Worthington who both successfully defended their PhD dissertations last year and have secured tenure-track positions in higher education. Many of our current graduate students are earning accolades as they stay busy teaching, presenting papers, and publishing. |
